Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) is the operational supervision layer of a train control system. It monitors train locations and movements across the railway network and assists operators in managing the service according to the planned timetable.
ATS typically provides functions such as train tracking, automatic route setting, timetable management, service regulation, headway management, train identification and operational status monitoring. Information is normally presented to operators at an Operations Control Centre (OCC) or similar control facility.
In an integrated Automatic Train Control (ATC) architecture, ATS generally works alongside Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO). ATP provides safety-critical movement protection, while ATO performs automated train-driving functions. ATS operates at a higher supervisory level, coordinating train services and supporting overall network performance.
During disruptions, ATS can assist controllers with service regulation, route changes, timetable adjustments and recovery strategies. Modern ATS systems may also interface with passenger information, signalling, depot, SCADA and other railway operational systems.
