MTR Corporation Limited
Keep Cities Moving
Hong Kong's statutory and publicly listed transit powerhouse, operating a world-class metro and express rail network carrying over 5 million daily passenger trips while exporting railway operations, asset management, and property development globally.
About MTR Corporation Limited
Established in 1975 as the Mass Transit Railway Corporation to construct and operate Hong Kong’s urban subway system, MTR Corporation was partially privatized on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (SEHK: 0066) in 2000, with the Government of Hong Kong maintaining majority ownership. In 2007, MTR merged operations with the government-owned Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), unifying the heavy rail, commuter lines, and Light Rail networks of Hong Kong under a single operator.
MTR Corporation is globally recognized for its operational reliability—maintaining an on-time train performance rate exceeding 99.9%—and its pioneering “Rail plus Property” (R+P) business model. Under R+P, the corporation develops master-planned residential and commercial complexes above and adjacent to railway stations and depots, capturing land value gains to self-finance heavy rail infrastructure and long-term asset renewal without permanent operational government subsidies.
Beyond Hong Kong, MTR exports its operations, maintenance, and project management expertise worldwide. It operates the Elizabeth line (TfL Rail) and South Western Railway concessions in London/UK, the Sydney Metro automated driverless network and Melbourne’s suburban rail network (Metro Trains Melbourne) in Australia, and several urban rail lines across Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou in Mainland China.
