About Stadler Rail AG
Founded in 1942 by Ernst Stadler in Zurich and acquired by Peter Spuhler in 1989, Stadler Rail AG has grown into one of the world’s preeminent railway rolling stock manufacturers and systems integrators. Headquartered in Bussnang, Switzerland, Stadler operates extensive production, engineering, and maintenance facilities across Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Poland, Hungary, the United States, and several other global hubs.
Stadler is renowned for its modular, tailor-made train architectures. Its signature modular product lines include the FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train), the KISS (Comfortable Innovative Speedy Suburban Train double-decker), the SMILE high-speed train (branded as ‘Giruno’ by Swiss Federal Railways SBB for Gotthard Base Tunnel operations), and versatile heavy-haul and dual-mode locomotives such as the EURODUAL and EURO6000. In urban transit, Stadler manufactures industry-leading LRVs, metros, and streetcars, including the Variobahn, Tango, and TINA platforms.
In addition to traditional electric and diesel-electric traction, Stadler has pioneered alternative drive technologies. This includes record-setting battery-electric trainsets (FLIRT Akku) and hydrogen fuel cell passenger multiple units (FLIRT H2). Stadler’s Signalling division also develops proprietary rail safety technologies, such as the GUARDIA European Train Control System (ETCS) onboard units and NOVA Pro CBTC automated driverless signaling systems.
