ETCS is a standardized train control and protection system that continuously supervises train movement, speed, and signalling information to improve railway safety, interoperability, and operational efficiency.

The European Train Control System (ETCS) is the signalling and train protection component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It was developed to replace the many incompatible national train protection systems used across Europe and to enable seamless cross-border railway operations.
ETCS continuously monitors the train’s speed and position and compares it with the permitted movement authority received from the signalling system. If the driver exceeds the permitted speed or attempts to pass the end of the movement authority, ETCS automatically applies the brakes to prevent unsafe operation.
Depending on the level of implementation, ETCS may use trackside balises, Euroloops, radio communication (GSM-R or FRMCS in the future), and Radio Block Centres (RBC) to exchange information with trains.
ETCS is suitable for high-speed railways, conventional mainline railways, freight operations, and increasingly for metro applications where interoperability with national networks is required.
The system improves safety, increases line capacity, supports higher operating speeds, and reduces dependence on traditional lineside signalling.
