BRT

Railway terminology

BRT

Bus Rapid Transit

A high-capacity bus-based public transport system designed to provide faster and more reliable services through dedicated lanes, priority measures and purpose-built stations.

01

Detailed explanation

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is a bus-based public transport system designed to provide higher capacity, speed and reliability than conventional urban bus services.

BRT systems commonly use dedicated or segregated bus lanes, allowing vehicles to avoid general road congestion. Depending on the system, they may also incorporate priority at traffic signals, dedicated stations, off-board fare collection, level boarding and high-capacity articulated or bi-articulated buses.

A well-developed BRT corridor can provide some operational characteristics associated with rail-based urban transit while retaining the flexibility of road vehicles.

BRT infrastructure can range from relatively simple dedicated bus lanes to comprehensive systems with segregated corridors, substantial stations, control systems, passenger information systems and integrated feeder services.

Key Characteristics
Dedicated or segregated bus lanes
High-frequency passenger services
Dedicated BRT stations or enhanced stops
Traffic-signal priority where applicable
Articulated or high-capacity buses
Level or near-level passenger boarding in some systems
Off-board fare collection may be provided
Real-time passenger information
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
Integration with other public transport modes
Simple Explanation

Think of BRT as a bus system designed to operate more like rapid transit, using dedicated lanes and priority measures to provide faster, more frequent and more reliable journeys than ordinary buses.

Standards and references

BRT does not have one universal railway standard. Applicable requirements depend on the country and system and may include:

National road and public transport regulations
Bus and vehicle safety standards
Accessibility requirements
Road and station design standards
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) standards
Fire and life-safety requirements for stations and facilities
BRT Standard developed by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)
