About Volker Rail
VolkerRail is an established railway infrastructure contractor and technology specialist with a combined operating heritage spanning over eight decades. Tracing its British roots to 1935 as Grant Lyon Eagre Ltd (later GrantRail, a joint venture with British Steel/Corus) and its Dutch roots to the 1940s, the business was fully acquired and consolidated under Royal VolkerWessels (Koninklijke VolkerWessels) to operate as VolkerRail across the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The company employs over 2,500 dedicated railway engineers, track workers, and plant specialists.
VolkerRail operates as a tier-one infrastructure delivery partner for national infrastructure managers including Network Rail, ProRail, Transport for London (TfL), and numerous light rail and municipal metro authorities. The company owns and deploys one of the most extensive proprietary heavy on-track machine (OTM) and road-rail vehicle (RRV) fleets in Europe, featuring Kirow multi-tasking railway cranes, continuous-action tampers, dynamic track stabilizers, and precision ballast regulators.
In the United Kingdom, VolkerRail is a principal member of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) East of Leeds Alliance, the Rail Systems Alliance (North West & Central and East Coast), and the East West Rail delivery consortium. In the Netherlands, VolkerRail holds multi-year performance-based maintenance and renewal contracts for ProRail, maintains the Dutch high-speed railway line (HSL-Zuid), and delivers track and catenary upgrades for urban tram and metro networks across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. The firm is also a certified Step 5 leader on the Dutch Safety Culture Ladder.
