Land Transport Authority (LTA Singapore)
Connecting people and places, enhancing knowledge and processes
The statutory client body and transport authority of Singapore spearheading multi-billion-dollar transit expansions, including the fully underground Cross Island Line, the elevated Jurong Region Line, and the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link.
About Land Transport Authority (LTA Singapore)
Established on September 1, 1995, through the merger of four public transport entities under the Ministry of Transport, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is a statutory board of the Singapore Government. Employing over 6,000 engineering, technical, and regulatory professionals, LTA acts as the master developer, asset owner, and procurement agency overseeing land transport across the island nation.
LTA’s railway purview encompasses the conceptualization, feasibility study, detailed design procurement, civil construction management, systems testing, and commissioning of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) networks. Through its asset-financing framework (the New Rail Financing Framework), LTA owns all rail operating assets—including tracks, tunnels, viaducts, signaling architectures, power systems, and rolling stock—while licensing licensed operators (SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit) for daily revenue operations.
Under LTA’s Land Transport Master Plan (LTMP), the authority is expanding the rail network to approximately 360 kilometers, targeting that 8 in 10 households live within a 10-minute walk of an MRT station. Key active megaprojects commissioned and overseen by LTA include the 50-kilometer fully underground Cross Island Line (CRL), the 24-kilometer elevated Jurong Region Line (JRL), the Downtown Line 3 Extension, the Circle Line Stage 6 loop closure, the integrated multi-tier East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID), and the bilateral Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.
