Today's Work, Tomorrow's Heritage
One of Japan's historic "Big Five" general contracting giants, recognized for delivering complex Shinkansen mountain tunnels, large-diameter shield tunneling, automated urban metro lines, and multimodal transit hub infrastructure across Asia.
About Shimizu Corporation
Founded in 1804 by master carpenter Kisuke Shimizu in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Shimizu Corporation is one of Japan’s premier “Big Five” super-general contractors (zenikon). Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (Prime Market / Nikkei 225) and headquartered in Kyobashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, the group employs over 16,000 personnel worldwide across civil engineering, architectural building, infrastructure development, and engineering research divisions.
Shimizu has played a defining role in shaping Japan’s railway network since the dawn of modernization. The company has delivered major civil, tunneling, and viaduct packages across the Tokaido, Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines. Shimizu is widely known for mastering complex underground engineering, including deep mountain base tunnels excavated via the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), large-scale urban shield tunneling beneath high-density urban corridors, and underground station cavern excavations adjacent to active railway tracks.
Internationally, Shimizu Corporation acts as a tier-1 EPC contractor across Asia. Landmark international transit achievements include constructing underground and elevated civil packages for the Jakarta MRT North-South Line in Indonesia, Singapore MRT lines (including Downtown and Thomson-East Coast Line underground packages), and major sections of the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR). Shimizu also deploys advanced proprietary construction automation, digital twin modeling (BIM/CIM), and low-carbon civil materials.
