Unattended Train Operation
The highest level of train automation, where trains operate in normal service without a driver or other operational staff onboard.
Detailed explanation
Under UTO, functions traditionally performed by a driver are automated or managed remotely. These may include train starting, acceleration, speed regulation, braking, accurate station stopping, door operation and departure.
UTO requires close integration between Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), rolling stock and the Operations Control Centre (OCC). Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) is commonly used to support UTO on modern metro systems.
Because there is no driver onboard, the overall railway system must also address functions beyond normal train movement. These can include obstacle and intrusion detection, platform-train interface monitoring, passenger emergency communication, evacuation arrangements, remote train monitoring and management of degraded operating conditions.
UTO can enable consistent train operation, short headways, flexible service levels and reduced dependence on onboard operating staff. It is particularly associated with highly automated metro and urban transit systems.
