🇦🇺 Global Engineering Firms Selected to Advance Australia’s Newcastle–Sydney High Speed Rail Project

🇦🇺 Australia’s High Speed Rail Authority has appointed a group of major international engineering and infrastructure firms to support development of the proposed Newcastle–Sydney high-speed rail corridor, the first stage of Australia’s longer-term east coast high-speed rail vision

Australia’s high-speed rail ambitions are progressing, with major international engineering and infrastructure specialists selected to support the development of the proposed Newcastle–Sydney high-speed rail corridor.

The appointments by Australia’s High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) bring together expertise across engineering, architecture, programme delivery, environmental planning, commercial strategy, property and passenger demand forecasting as the project moves through its development phase.

Major suppliers appointed

The emerging advisory and delivery team includes several companies with significant experience in major railway and infrastructure programmes.

WSP Australia has been appointed as Technical and Architectural Adviser, working with a multidisciplinary team that includes Grimshaw and Maynard Design Consultancy. The appointment will support development of the technical and architectural solutions required for the proposed high-speed railway.

Bechtel Infrastructure (Australia) has been selected as Delivery Partner. Bechtel says its role will support a two-year development phase aimed at progressing the project towards construction readiness, subject to a future investment decision by the Australian Government.

AECOM Australia has also been appointed as Environmental Planning and Assessment Adviser, providing specialist support for the environmental and planning processes associated with development of the corridor.

Other appointments include Bellgrove Advisory for commercial and transaction advisory services, JAT Services for strategic property advice and Veitch Lister Consulting for demand forecasting.

Together, the appointments establish a broad professional team capable of addressing the complex technical, commercial, environmental and delivery challenges associated with developing a new high-speed railway.

Newcastle–Sydney identified as the first stage

The Newcastle–Sydney corridor is being developed as the first stage of Australia’s longer-term high-speed rail vision.

The Australian Government established the High Speed Rail Authority in 2023 to lead the planning and development of a future high-speed railway network along the country’s east coast.

The longer-term vision could ultimately connect Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, while also improving connections with regional communities along the corridor.

Developing Newcastle–Sydney first provides an opportunity to establish many of the engineering standards, operational requirements, procurement strategies and delivery arrangements that could subsequently be applied to future sections of the network.

Moving from concept towards delivery

The latest appointments indicate that the programme is moving into a more detailed stage of development.

High-speed rail requires integration across numerous engineering disciplines, including alignment, tunnels and structures, stations, track, traction power, signalling, telecommunications, rolling stock, operations, safety and environmental requirements.

Early coordination between these disciplines will be particularly important in developing a technically viable railway while managing interfaces with existing transport infrastructure and densely developed areas between Newcastle and Sydney.

The participation of companies with experience on major international transport programmes also gives the High Speed Rail Authority access to global high-speed rail and megaproject delivery expertise.

The coming development phase will therefore be an important period for Australia’s high-speed rail programme as technical studies, planning, environmental assessment and delivery strategies continue to mature.

If successfully progressed, Newcastle–Sydney could become the foundation for a new generation of intercity rail transport in Australia and the first step towards a wider east coast high-speed rail network.

RailBays will continue to follow the development of Australia’s high-speed rail programme as the project moves through planning, engineering and procurement.
