Job Summary

Arup is seeking an experienced Associate – Rail System Safety (Risk & Assurance) to lead the delivery of system safety, safety assurance and risk management across major railway programmes. The role focuses on supporting clients throughout the full asset lifecycle, from concept development and design through to operation, modification and maintenance. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams, manage client relationships and provide technical leadership on complex rail safety assurance projects.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead railway system safety and assurance projects.
  • Develop safety cases and structured safety justifications.
  • Facilitate hazard identification and risk assessment workshops.
  • Apply recognised techniques including HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Support Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) and Assessment Bodies (AsBo).
  • Deliver safety assurance for signalling, rolling stock, infrastructure and railway systems.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to business development.
  • Build strong client relationships and support commercial delivery.

Minimum Requirements
  • Chartered Engineer (or equivalent).
  • Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Science or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience leading railway safety and risk programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of UK and European railway safety frameworks.
  • Experience in signalling, digital railway, rolling stock, communications, infrastructure or operational safety.
