Melbourne has introduced its first G Class Next Generation Tram into passenger service, marking the beginning of a major fleet renewal programme that will deliver 100 new low-floor trams for the city’s extensive tram network.
The first G Class tram entered passenger operation on 30 July 2026, initially operating on Route 59 between Airport West and Flinders Street Station.
The new fleet is being supplied by Alstom under Melbourne’s Next Generation Tram programme and is based on the company’s Flexity 2 platform, adapted specifically for the operational and accessibility requirements of Melbourne’s tram network.
100 New Trams for Melbourne
Alstom is delivering 100 G Class trams as part of a contract awarded in 2022. The manufacturer values its contract at approximately €700 million, while the wider Victorian Government G Class programme, including supporting infrastructure, represents an investment of approximately AUD 1.85 billion.
The trams are being manufactured at Alstom’s Dandenong facility in Victoria, with more than 65% local content.
According to Alstom, the programme has supported more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. The company has also invested more than AUD 40 million in its Dandenong manufacturing facility to support local production capability.
Alstom will maintain the new fleet from a purpose-built maintenance facility at Maidstone in Melbourne.
Improved Accessibility and Passenger Capacity
The 25-metre-long G Class has been designed to accommodate up to approximately 150 passengers and introduces significant accessibility improvements compared with some of Melbourne’s older tram fleets.
