AtkinsRéalis has secured engineering services and supervision contracts from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) to support the continued operation and expansion of the Riyadh Metro network, alongside supervision of strategic road infrastructure projects across the Saudi capital.

The appointments strengthen AtkinsRéalis’ involvement in one of the Middle East’s largest urban transport programmes as Riyadh continues to expand its integrated public transport network.Under the agreements, AtkinsRéalis will provide engineering consultancy, construction supervision, project management and technical oversight services associated with the Riyadh Metro. The scope is intended to support the efficient delivery of ongoing infrastructure works while maintaining required standards for quality, safety and railway operations.

Supporting Riyadh Metro’s Next Phase

Riyadh Metro entered passenger service through a phased opening beginning in late 2024 and has since become a central component of Riyadh’s wider public transport strategy.

The six-line network extends approximately 176 km and serves 85 stations, creating a high-capacity rapid-transit backbone across the Saudi capital.

The latest contracts indicate that investment is continuing beyond the initial delivery and opening of the network, with engineering resources now supporting ongoing operations, infrastructure development and future expansion.

AtkinsRéalis already has extensive experience on the programme, having previously provided programme management and supervision services associated with the operation and maintenance of Riyadh Metro.

Wider Transport Infrastructure Programme

The new appointments are not limited to rail.

AtkinsRéalis will also supervise the implementation of strategic road development projects across Riyadh. These schemes are intended to improve traffic movement, road safety and connectivity while supporting the city’s continuing urban expansion.

Combining metro development with improvements to the surrounding road network forms part of RCRC’s broader strategy to create a more integrated and sustainable transportation system.

The programme is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, under which major investments are being made in public transport, urban infrastructure and mobility across the Kingdom.

Contracts Signed During Saudi-Canadian Investment Forum

The agreements were signed during the Saudi-Canadian Investment Forum on 9 July 2026, held in Saudi Arabia during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to the Kingdom. The forum brought together government representatives, investors, financial institutions and private-sector organisations and covered investment opportunities across infrastructure and several other strategic sectors.

For the railway industry, the award provides another indication that Riyadh Metro is moving from its initial construction and commissioning phase into a longer-term programme involving operations, optimisation and further network development. As Riyadh’s population and urban footprint continue to grow, further investment in metro capacity and integrated transport infrastructure is expected to remain an important part of the capital’s development programme.
