Chennai Metro Awards Capacity Enhancement Consultancy Contract to AECOM–Nippon Koei JV

CHENNAI, INDIA — Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a consultancy contract to a joint venture of AECOM India Private Limited and Nippon Koei India Private Limited for the Chennai Metro Phase 1 Network Capacity Enhancement Project.

The appointment covers Project Management Consultancy Services (PMCS) and Detailed Design Consultancy (DDC) as CMRL progresses plans to enhance the capacity of Chennai’s existing metro network.

₹35.97 Crore Consultancy Contract

The contract, identified as CMRL-P1-PMC-01-2025, has a reported value of approximately ₹35.97 crore (₹359.69 million).

The AECOM–Nippon Koei joint venture will provide project management and detailed design support for the capacity enhancement programme, with the consultancy assignment reported to have a duration of 1,461 days, or approximately four years.

Supporting Chennai Metro’s Existing Network

The capacity enhancement programme relates to Chennai Metro Phase 1, which forms the core of the city’s operational metro network.

The consultancy is expected to support CMRL in developing and implementing measures required to accommodate increasing demand and improve the capacity and performance of the existing system.

The award is particularly significant as Chennai continues a much wider expansion of its urban rail network, including the major Phase II programme currently under construction.

AECOM and Nippon Koei Secure Consultancy Role

The contract brings together the engineering and programme-management capabilities of AECOM India and Nippon Koei India for the next stage of CMRL’s Phase 1 capacity enhancement programme.
