Railway terminology

OCC

Operations Control Centre

The central facility from which railway operations are monitored, supervised and coordinated to support safe, reliable and efficient train services.

01

Detailed explanation

An Operations Control Centre (OCC) is the central operational facility used to monitor and manage train services and associated railway systems across a network or line.

The OCC provides controllers and operators with real-time information on train locations, service status, signalling conditions and other operational information. It enables coordination of normal operations as well as responses to disruptions, incidents and emergencies.

Depending on the railway system, the OCC may integrate or interface with systems such as Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), signalling and train control, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), traction power control, telecommunications, passenger information systems, CCTV, radio communications and other operational systems.

On automated metro systems, the OCC has an especially important role because train movements may be controlled through Automatic Train Control (ATC), Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC). For Driverless Train Operation (DTO) and Unattended Train Operation (UTO), additional functions may be remotely monitored or controlled from the OCC.

The OCC also supports service regulation, incident management, communication between operational teams and coordination with stations, depots, maintenance personnel and emergency services.
