MRT Corp has awarded the railway systems turnkey contract for the Penang Mutiara LRT Line to a joint venture between Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and Theta Edge Berhad.
The contract, valued at approximately RM3.028 billion, represents a major procurement milestone for Penang’s first light rail transit system and enables railway systems design and delivery to progress alongside the civil works already underway.
The systems package covers the delivery of key railway systems required for operation of the Mutiara Line. The award brings MRCB’s infrastructure delivery capabilities together with Theta Edge’s technology and systems expertise under the joint venture.
The appointment of the systems turnkey contractor marks another significant step in implementation of the Mutiara Line. Civil Main Contract Package 1 had previously been awarded to SRS Consortium, with its Notice to Proceed issued in July 2025.
The Mutiara Line is being developed by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) as a major component of Penang’s future public transport network. MRT Corp describes the scheme as a 29.5 km line with 21 stations, connecting key areas across Penang and intended to improve public transport accessibility and reduce road congestion.
